20 June 2011

Burgers and beer for breakfast please.

It's been a month. Sorry. I have been keeping myself really busy now that the it is getting warm. I will have to break this down into weekends.

May 27th on...

I went to Seoul on a Friday for a party at MWG. Thomas was outside here is how we looked.

I shot gunned a beer with Chase and Hyun-Ki. Then Cam and Martyn showed up and everything gets a bit foggy after that cause Aki poured me a half cup of tequila. Vague memories of dancing, a FlavaFlav style necklace and walking.

Can you spot me?

This shot is in no way needed

When I got back to Chuncheon I headed straight to Kelly's play and thankfully caught the end of it. She had to go for a cast and crew thing but her parents took me out for Korean donuts. Saturday I met up with Leanda, Al and Kevin in Chuncheon for the Mime Festival. Russ joined us later and we partied a bit at my place and Skyped with Tyson. The mime festival did not include any mimes. I did however put my head in this over sized condom. Russ and I had lotteria the next day and I walked him to the bus station.

June 3rd on...

I think I stayed in until Saturday? Then a drunk Stephen Toedter texted to go party. Also Martyn was on his way with many friends because there was a Skate Comp in Chuncheon Sunday. So I decided to party and promised to round up girls. Well I couldn't because they wouldn't let us in any where "Koreans only". At the second club we actually got into a bit of a scuffle after one of the guys waiting in line told us he wasn't our friends and that we didn't belong here. Stephen understandably replied with a fuck you and then as the Koreans friends were getting involved I decided it was time for us to leave.

Skate Comp was fun... Oh I forgot it was also Russ's birthday and a long weekend. So I was going to try to do both because it was also Martyns last weekend. However this did not work out because Samcheok was 4 hours away. First I thought I could head out Saturday morning and come back for the competition but no I recently acquired an itouch and stayed up all night obsessing over it. Then I thought I could head out after the competition but it was already 6ish and they were not spending a lot of time there on Monday... it just didn't pan out in the end and I promised to find a way to make it up to Russ.

Here we are shotgunning a beer.

Then I just sat around and watched things and I met some new friends. We went and had dinner some makguksu? Chuncheon specialty #2. Then we were split between going to Seoul or staying in Chuncheon. I wanted to stay in Chuncheon cause my own bed is always appealing and I asked Phil if it was okay if I hung out with them. He said yes, however we went somewhere else. Gangchon? We were at a pension and we ate and drank a lot and I felt pretty weird the whole time. Maybe sun, alcohol and a weirdo personality with strangers? In the morning we went to a waterfall and there was fake bird sounds and signs that said things like "wisdom", "dreams" and "networking". We hung out in a stream for a bit and it was fun. Then I went home on the subway and walked for a long time to get my bike.

June 10th on...

Saturday I went to class. I still suck but it is good for me to do something mentally and physically stimulating. Then I went to a show in Hongdae. It had been a longtime and it was nice. Highlight was covers of negative approach. Joe came to meet me there and I had no intention of drinking but he suggested wine and I agreed. Then Jani gave me some weird drink and I think I told her I wanted to take our relationship to the next level? I went with Joe to the park and we ran into Russ and I went with him and company to another bar after running away from a man with dreadlocks pictured here.

Russ was with a nice guy named Josh. Then I found Cass, Al, Kevin, Leanda and Melissa. Melissa was in hiding for a bit after the last time I saw her cause she ran into a some idiot men. I am super glad she is back! We like the same things and she is fun! We were at garage, talent was too foreign so I convinced Mel to check out Club 500 with me cause I knew something was going down there that friends might be at. It took us a long time to find it but it gave us an excuse to talk to various men. We ran into Josh again. We finally found 500 and sure enough Didi was in the doorway when we got there and magically helped us with the price of cover. Thibault, Fugiwara, Joseph, Khan and Tong were there minus Thomas cause he is in France. Eventually the rest of our friends joined us and  I danced with girls as usual. We also met new friends PJ, 아기, 재현. We rode on scooters with them through Hongdae! It was pretty fun. We had chicken and played titanic and then I said "Ya" a lot. Which is the Korean equivalent of hey but rude. Then next day I felt terrible but decided it was a good idea to go to myeongdong.

June 17th on...

Stayed in on Friday cause I didn't know Didi was leaving the country until it was too late to pack a bag and make it out. He is fun and I am sad. I had lunch plans with Joe and we went to this Latin fest. It was like Folklorama but smaller and more crowded, slower and less organized. Pol was there too and we got smoothies instead and went shopping.

Then I went to Ground Scratch with my Bboy class. A lady took a picture of me right away and that was weird. Then I found out one of my class mates speaks French. It was nice to have someone to talk to. Then Melissa came! It was okay I wish there was more dancing and less rapping. I don't know what they are saying so unless they have really great rhythm it is very boring. One did have great rhythm and I saw him later in the night and told him he did great.  Then another man with dreadlocks told me something about when they call I have to go down and I didnt understand and then he said he was a judge for best dressed and when they call just go there. I said okay but then when the time came he wasn't there and I was confused and none of the Koreans I was with knew I was who the announcers were talking about. Eventually I came down and everyone was like oh there she is a foreigner. But then I was told I would have to strut or something and I totally choked but I didn't come in last. Oh did I mention the other contestants where dancers?!!? I won a shirt and a pair of AirMaxs that are 2 sizes too big.

Then Mel and I set out to find new outfits for the evening. We looked great! We had a meal that was more food then any 2 people need.

We went to garage and MWG and ran into a bunch of people again. Here are some...

Joseph invited us out to some club cause they were on the guest list. We said ok then left to get Melissa's friend who is awesome but I forget her name. Then met up with Jae Hyeon and 아기 and some other friends we met before but do not remember. We went to eat or something and there friends that were girls were calling me a baby for not drinking soju and would pour it in my beer when I was not looking or cheersing them. I would be more mad if they weren't so cute and nice the rest of the time. We went to garage and danced and I lost my ring.

Next day Mel and I went for breakfast on a patio and both wanted burgers and beer. An expensive beer at least. We shopped a bit more like I walked us around in circles for a long time. During this time we were stopped by a couple saying we had the right look for their party they are throwing and they took our picture and interviewed us. Seriously the weirdest life here. Then we went to Itaewon to meet up with Mel's friend Jo. We had a cocktail and then we took a cab to my dance class and Mel went off to the bus station.

During the week...

I have been skateboarding everyday cause I have a huge skatepark at my disposal. I have only ever seen one other person there and it is a girl on a BMX that comes with her dad. I ride out everyday cause rainy season

is coming and it is fun. Also the view on the way out is nice.

I eat with Stephen usually once a week still and Kelly was busy with exams. I have lost interest in learning Korean for some reason. I need to practice dancing more though. Also been hanging out with this dude oh wait that's called work. haha life.

In other news this guy was wearing this shirt at a trancey Dj thing and was holding a glowstick. In Korea you cannot judge a man on his band shirts and shoes like back home.

Quote time! These will probably not matter to anyone but the people involved but I want to write them down for later personal lolz.

"Why are they all clapping, I dont get it." "You know how they are"
"He is clearly wearing blush" "I know he's sooo cute"
"The trinity!"
"This is my girlfriend"  "just kidding!"
"야"
"Oh is it time for soccer?"
Ad painting on side of Aland. "What is your next chapter?" "I have no idea, I have just been rolling with it for a while now"
"You guys just seemed mad at each other"
"What were you even doing down there?"
"Melissa, may I ask you a personal question?"
"Same shit next weekend?" "I can't wait"

Would you have time later to smell some meat?

So I realize that this blog has gone from adventures in Korea to Mel's party page but whatever I will get the tourist thing going again probably soon. Maybe.

Another double hitter. Friday I met up with Martyn, Cass, Sophie, Karen and neck tattoo (I forgot his name) in Hongdae for some fun. It was a usual night maybe a little slow to be honest and very low on the talent. Some amusing things that happened. Including these conversations..

- Hongdae Park "Do you come here often?"

- A super drunk guy sitting on the street getting patted on the back by a cop. In Canada this is called drunk tank time.

- "Are you Korean?" directed at me. I don't know, are you blind? I pretended I didn't hear him.

- A man with Jimmy from South Park style crutches and blonde Weird Al hair grinding hard with a Korean girl.

- A guy fell down the stairs, and was knocked out. Martyn and I laughed until the doormen pick him up and there is a giant river of blood. His friend tried to carry him away not realizing how bad his injury is while some hero yelled at him about how bad of a friend he was ending on "if you were my friend I would kill you". Then the injured guy woke up and started swinging at everyone.

- Douche with a faux hawk winking at me. First response "OMG, this is happening" turned away. Second response, "is this a joke?" worst look on my face. Him "no". Running the second time. An aside to this guy Martyn pulled a robbery on him not to long ago only after making him act a fool and revealing his line of "I live 5 minutes from here."

- Various questions about meat smelling between Martyn and me.

We ended off the night with karaoke and a kebab.

Please note graffiti in the back. You know I did/will.

I slept on Martyn's floor, dreamt of my cats and made Dre 3 hours late for the tattoo convention by waking up late and getting us so lost. I genuinely still feel bad.

Tattoo convention was alright. I was not feeling nice and there was nowhere to sit. Also I would like to rename it men with bad bods showing their goods. Views...

This picture was hard to get cause boys are too cool for school, but I felt we should commemorate the occasion. The stranger that took this picture did a terrible job.

Then we wanted a burger and settled for McDick's? The price was nice. Then we took a cab to a club with a huge line up for a this? We got in for an even nicer price.

There were a lot of people and it was loud and there were lasers which at one point I said were beautiful? Part true (the fog of cigarette smoke created a lovely design) but mostly joking but I said it to Phil who doesn't know the depth of my silly. Drinks were $10 a piece so we went to the corner store for drinks.

As any club in Asia it was filled with guys in suits. Ummmm... so I made my own fun by dancing silly with new friends and letting suits buy me drinks and running away. Eventually I was dancing alone and a lovely lady danced with me. Her friends gave me glowsticks and cigarettes. Eric used the glowsticks while I just threw them at people. I considered getting sillier with bottles but the glowstick thing didn't go over so well, instead I found a friends bank card on the ground.

At 4am we went to eat then waited for the bus. Dre, Wan, Martyn, Daesup and Eric!

I ended off the weekend with a meal with Stephen Toedter. He didn't believe that I could double stair the 9 floors at work so we made a bet. I do it 2-3 times a day so those pine nuts are all mine.

Tuesday this number called me 010-8728-8422 called me 7 times in a row, who are you and when is that ever a normal thing to do. Then I went shopping and also got Taco Bell. I ended up with 3 polka dotted items? I also bought my Europe book and started planning. People keep asking when I am coming home and I really don't know. The only thing I have committed to is that I will be in Winnipeg spring 2012 to see my little brother graduate. Otherwise I am going to travel for as long as I can and after that too. Choosing life.

Is it possible to be too friendly?

World DJ Festival

There was actually nothing else to do. I looked. No shows nothing. Many friends were in Busan for the long weekend. So I put out my feelers and a new lady friend Leanda that I met last weekend was going and I asked if I could go with. Everyone was rad and we had roadies on the long subway. Approaching view. Inside it was designed like a maze?

Introducing Team Zebra. Charlotte and I hit it off but she is leaving today. The saddest but thats life here. We took many walks and chatted hard.

I ran into Thomas who I had also met last week at MWG trying to calm Chase down. We talked about how happy Korean hip hop (not into it) was and how the Black tent (yeah really I feel like anywhere else that would be considered racist) turned into the sleeping tent.

I lost the crew so I spent some time freaking out and texting them. I eventually found everyone though. Thank you technology. I imagine you are having a fun time in your life but how about a retarded time? With fireworks?

Team Zebra reunion minus Charlotte?

I met up with Thomas again and some new friends Didi, Joseph, Thibault, Fugiwara and some others who's names I can't remember cause their names are Korean. We hung out and then Thomas was MCing for Fugiwara so we went backstage... I danced on the stage cause some guy asked me to with him and then there were too many people and it wasn't special anymore so I left. Team Zebra checked in on me but I told them it was okay to leave me. A view from the other side.

We took the subway home but jumped them fence to the KTX and immediately got busted and tried to hide in the bathroom. Then we just had to sit in the snack bar. No actual punishment. Hiding in the bathroom...

Friday the 13th

.

I went to Seoul some of my new friends were playing at MWG. While on the bus to Seoul I realized that due to the fact that all of my texts were failing that I clearly was out of money on my phone. BUMMER. MWG was fun and I danced

A "friend" said I could stay at his house which was a bit of a mess however it was the swankest apartment I have been at thus far. The view and the courtyard.

I spent the morning trying to get money on my phone only to find out it was impossible on the weekend. I bought a giant purple backpack cause it was hot and I had too many layers for carrying. I met up with Chris and Katie in Hongdae. Chris and I only meet up in the largest of cities now. Last time I saw him we were at a Crystal Stilts show in NYC and we happened to run into each other. This time was a little more planned but still. Katie found the nicest leather jacket for me. I know that she will find her own perfect jacket or bag soon for this incredible good deed.

We ate a millet pancake, drank mokoli, Katie got weirded out by a gross mole toucher, Chris got chopstick lessons, and we got lost. Back in Hongdae we parted ways and I am stoked for the next time I see them.

I was off to Charlotte's go away in Itaewon. She is the best and I am sad she left. The bar we were at was like a beach! Sand and all. We shared Korean man stories and I met some new friends.

Then off to Hongdae to meet up with Melissa and Sophia. They were way ahead of me in terms of drinks and I needed money to catch up which took too long. We couldn't stay at garage cause there was an undesirable man there and FF had a cover. MWG had one too but I had a stamp from the day before. I ran into friends there and was chatting and I lost the girls. I borrowed a phone they were okay but at FF and I told them to text when they were leaving and we would go to the jimjjilbong together. So I danced and had fun but they never called. Ran into Chase and my fav Koreans. Check the jacket and giant backpack.

Then I made the mistake of following some Koreans from Busan to eat and soju started and the sun was up and I definitely got sick moments before or after these pictures were taken.

Still killing it.

At least I'm not this guy

The next day I had a breakfast of 2 juices, 2 coffees and 3 cigarettes. I felt okay for a long time but then very bad. I ate Burger King then went to dance class where I tried to explain I partied too hard to my teacher but he didn't understand and still forced me to work... maybe he did understand.

5 May 2011

terrible or amazing, never boring.

2 weeks ago I went to a baseball game! Here are some photos Jon Wetmore took of it.

It was Riley's birthday and many men were there and Martyn got noisemakers but let me use them the whole time. He is the best! It was fun and every player has their own special song and dance.

Then I drank again around Cam and acted like a weirdo. I don't understand it but it stopped so who cares.

I had a nice egg sandwich with Martyn and then walked for an hour just cause it was nice out and then went home.

Last weekend I met up with Russ for art and sights and Cass for a ladies night.

Juergen Teller

Seodaemun Prison

Shout out to Russ for always knowing what is going on and letting me join! He is also the best! also for this photo of all the Korean rebels.

Then I headed to Itaewon for dinner with the ladies. Cass, Alma and Sophie. Then to Hongdae where I also met up with new friends Melissa and Leanda. We had a drink then went to Karaoke! It had free ice cream! Things got a little wild. PS I look like "Like a Virgin" Madonna whoops!

Then the girls went to hooka for a bit and I met up with Martyn, Chase, 한준영 and 김두영 at the park. First attempt they dropped me...

Things got a little creepy...

Dancing in the streets, you know how I do...

Handeupone blowing up or just talking to a cool dude out of military training or Cass. IDK.
